Jab Suticha is a Thailand native and the first woman in her family to serve in her countries army, graduate from high school, graduate from college and obtain a master’s degree. This was not done without difficulty, in order to complete these incredible milestones, she had to overcome numerous obstacles. But she never let it stop her. She has an intensely fierce drive and presence that can be felt even in looking at the images of her. Jab speaks five languages fluently and is learning Arabic next. I photograph women who have lost power, who are seeking power, and who have gained power. Jab represents a woman that even against all odds, has found power in herself and is an example of the incredible strength women have. I came into contact with Jab while I was in the States, I told her of the themes and styles I was interested in photographing and soon realized she was the perfect subject. We collaborated for weeks on all the details of the shoot and sought permission from various monks to shoot at these holy places. At the end of the shoot, we bonded over our stories of strength and perseverance and random weird conversations, like eating fried rat from the Thai street vendors. Ending with a toast, “Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”
